Blepharoplasty: myths and truth about the operation

In almost all European countries, one of the most popular and sought-after plastic surgeries is blepharoplasty , that is, surgery on the eyelids (lower, upper or both eyelids at once). The term comes from the ancient Greek word blefaros , which means eyelid. Initially , blepharoplasty was performed only in urgent need, and a little later, with the development of technology, for cosmetic purposes. “The eyes are the mirror of the soul”, and blepharoplasty can help emphasize your natural beauty .

We asked the practicing plastic surgeon of the beauty clinic of the Latvian Microsurgery Center Nonna Tomysheva and Maris Krumins to tell us more about the features of blepharoplasty .

– In what cases can blepharoplasty surgery be recommended to patients ?

– The main indications for eyelid surgery can be called such as: “bags” under the eyes, overhanging eyelids, excess skin on the eyelids, “heavy eyelids” or as they say “tired look”, as well as pronounced wrinkles in the eye area.

Unfortunately, with age, as well as due to prolonged exposure to the sun, the refusal to wear good sunglasses with UV protection, wrinkles gradually form and more serious problems may arise, because the skin around the eyes is very thin, there is practically no fat layer. .

In such cases, blepharoplasty helps to eliminate all cosmetic imperfections that have arisen. Often , blepharoplasty is performed simultaneously with a lifting operation (circular facelift or just the forehead area).

It should be noted that blepharoplasty can also be indicated for younger patients in the case of, for example, congenital swelling of the eyelids.

How is blepharoplasty performed ?

– Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. It depends on the complexity of the particular operation itself, and on the patient’s health indicators. The operation itself can last from 30 minutes to 1 hour. During the operation of the upper eyelid, the incision is made with a scalpel along the palpable fold, and during the operation on the lower eyelids, the deviation from the ciliary edge is 2-3 mm.

Thus, postoperative sutures are almost invisible.

If the skin condition is good, then blepharoplasty can be done by the transconjunctival method, when the incision is made from the inside of the eyelid. This operation may take 20-30 minutes.

– How long does the patient have to stay in the hospital?

– Blepharoplasty is considered an outpatient procedure. Therefore, a long stay in the hospital is not required. To reduce swelling and “ cyanosis ”, a special pressure bandage is applied to the eyes for several hours immediately after the operation.

– How long does it take for a patient to recover from blepharoplasty ?

– The rehabilitation postoperative period lasts 10-14 days, during this time there may be increased sensitivity of the eyes, lacrimation, “stinging” in the eyes. At this time, it is not recommended to read, sit at the computer, that is, strain your eyesight. Also, you should not wear lenses, play sports, go to the bath, sauna, drink alcohol. For a speedy recovery, it is recommended: emotional peace, unhurried walks in the fresh air, rest, and the implementation of all the recommendations of the attending physician.

– Are there any risks?

– Modern technologies for blepharoplasty surgery allow minimizing all risks. Before the operation, you should consult with the doctor and go through all the necessary procedures for examining the state of health. Of course, you need to consult with a specialized surgeon who has extensive experience in performing such operations.

– How to choose a surgeon or clinic, what to look for?

– Often, blepharoplasty is considered an operation for “age” patients. This is not true. Many young women under the age of 30 have all the indications for such an operation, but due to ignorance, delusions, they first experience various non-surgical methods. And then, due to the lack of the desired result, they come to us. It is important to understand that the main indication for surgery is not age, but the condition of the skin around the eyes. Folds, fatty hernia, flabbiness of the eyelids, omission of the corner of the eyes, ptosis of the eyebrows are all signals of the need for surgical care. Blepharoplasty allows not only to eliminate problems, but also significantly rejuvenate the entire face. It is also a mistake to consider blepharoplasty as a simple operation. This is a serious surgical intervention that requires a careful differentiated approach and accurate microsurgical calculation, so the experience and high qualifications of the surgeon are very important here. If you are going to do blepharoplasty , then you should take the choice of clinic and surgeon as seriously as possible.
