ViewOsteoarthritis is a joint disease that occurs in elderly people because of increased wear on the small wrist joints. It sometimes manifests itself after injuries.
Post-traumatic osteoarthritis can occur many years after joint injury (see wrist fractures). Younger people may also suffer from this condition.
Typically, osteoarthritis occurs at the base of the thumb and in the finger bones, which create inflammation and small cysts in the skin, especially fingertip joints, when deforming. If the arthritis is at the base of the thumb, swelling develops and the patient feels pain making circular movements. Patients are sometimes unable to hold a heavy cup of morning tea. Injections of steroid (anti-inflammatory) drugs can help to cope with this disease, but the final treatment is always surgery.

The seams are removed after two weeks. In the postoperative period, you will need to wear an orthosis or plaster cast, perform manual occupational therapy to help develop movements of your fingers
The result
After such an operation, the pain drastically decreases and the grip force improves, but it will never be the same as before the disease.
Can osteoarthritis be cured?
Unfortunately, osteoarthritis is incurable, but its development can be slowed down or even stopped with proper food and exercise while maintaining the maximum range of motion.
When should osteoarthritis be operated on?
Osteoarthritis should be operated on after all other treatment options have been exhausted – proper food, weight control, physical activity with the maximum range of motion, physical therapy, painkillers, and steroid injections.
