Ganglia, hygroma, mucous cysts or subcutaneous formations in the area of tendons and joints

Gangliona or hygromas are benign cystic formations that occur along tendons or joints. Gangliona are formed by a shell filled with a jelly-like mass. Initially, these formations are noticeable as small bumps (often – bumps on the wrist), which gradually increase in size. A hygroma can vary in size and cause more or less pain (especially if it compresses the carpal nerves). Ganglia can also restrict movement if they are in close proximity to a joint. Gangliona can be found in people of both sexes and different ages, but most often they are observed in women 20-40 years old. Gangliona or hygromas can be diagnosed clinically – when examining the patient, as well as when additional examinations are prescribed. Additional tests may include x-rays, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance. Hygromas can be caused by trauma, sports, physical work.

FAQ

Is a ganglion cyst dangerous?

No, a ganglion cyst is a benign formation filled with fluid. It cannot develop into cancer. A hygroma is usually a cosmetic defect, but can sometimes cause pain due to nerve compression or joint irritation.

Is operating a ganglion cyst mandatory?

No, if it does not interfere with movement, cause pain, or interfere with its appearance, the ganglion cyst may not be operated on. However, then you must be sure that it is indeed a ganglion cyst, and additional examinations – ultrasonoscopy or magnetic resonance imaging – should be performed.

Can a ganglion cyst be pierced with a needle?

The cyst should not be pierced, as there is a possibility of injecting an infection, injuring large blood vessels or nerves. The hand surgeon can drain the fluid from the ganglion cysts before performing anesthesia. However, it should be taken into account that the cyst may recur after uptake in up to 80% of cases.

Can a ganglion cyst recur after surgery?

Statistics show that the chance of recurrence or recurrence of a ganglion cyst after its surgical removal is 10-20%, therefore surgery is recommended only if the ganglion causes symptoms.
