There are two types of osteomyelitis:

  • Type I osteomyelitis affects children more often. It is an acute disease, when from any source of infection in the body, bacteria are transported in the blood to the bones, causing inflammation. Treatment of osteomyelitis is usually started with antibiotics, but if such treatment is unsuccessful, surgery is performed, during which the infected bone is removed.
  • Type II osteomyelitis occurs following traumatic bone lesions, e.g. fractures. If bacteria invade the bone following injury, they cause permanent inflammation and destruction of the bone may occur. If it is not possible to eradicate this inflammation with medicines and a non-healing purulent wound develops, surgery is performed. During the surgery, all dead, infected tissues with a poor blood supply are extracted, being replaced by a blood supplied tissue graft from the healthy body part.

Concomitantly, osteomyelitis patients have to receive a long-term course of antibacterial therapy.
