One of the most common congenital hand defects is syndactyly (fingers fused together). During hand surgery the fingers can be separated. During the surgery a small skin transplantation is also necessary for wound closure. More complicated surgery is performed if the finger bones have grown together, however completely undisturbed finger function can usually be obtained. Convalescence
Following the surgery local discomfort and pain may occur, which is well controlled with analgesic tablets. Wounds usually heal in 2 weeks. The wound should be dressed 2 to 3 times a week. The skin sutures do not usually need to be removed, as for children a self-absorbing suture material is used. During the postoperative period, a splint or orthosis may be necessary, as well as ergotherapy and movement training for the fingers and the arm.
Result
The results of the surgery depend on the severity of the congenital defect. In less severe cases, such as syndactyly, the cosmetic and functional result is usually good. In more severe cases, the primary aim of the treatment is to improve arm function, but the cosmetic result is usually secondary.
